Kurze Antwort

Does chromium help blood sugar control?

Possibly, in people with diabetes, as an addition to existing treatment — and the systematic reviews have contradicted each other for two decades. A large 2022 analysis found chromium improved HbA1c, fasting glucose and insulin resistance as an add-on. Earlier reviews concluded the opposite. Nothing supports it for people without diabetes.

Wechselwirkungen

  • Additive with glucose-lowering medication. Where chromium does work, it works in the same direction as your prescription.1

    Vorsicht

  • Antacids and proton pump inhibitors reduce chromium absorption; vitamin C increases it. Neither effect is large enough to plan around, but it explains some trial inconsistency.

    Vorsicht

Wer es nicht einnehmen sollte

  • Avoid supplementing if you have impaired kidney function. Case reports of renal impairment exist at high chromium picolinate doses, and the kidneys are the route of clearance.

    Meiden

  • Not established as safe in pregnancy at supplement doses.

    Vorsicht

Unser Fazit

Genuinely contested rather than settled either way. If you do not have diabetes, the evidence does not reach you at all.

  • Starke EvidenzEine große randomisierte Studie, eine lange Kohortenstudie oder Übereinstimmung mehrerer davon.
  • Vorläufige EvidenzReal, aber dünn — klein, kurz, beobachtend oder noch nicht repliziert.

Where the evidence points

The most systematic recent attempt screened over 9,500 articles and pooled 119 randomised trials across nine different supplements, asking a narrow question: does adding this to existing diabetes treatment improve glycaemic control? Chromium came out as one of the few that did, on all three of HbA1c, fasting glucose and HOMA-IR.

A separate meta-analysis of thirteen trials found a fasting glucose reduction of around 29 mg/dL — and opened by noting that previous systematic reviews on exactly this question had been inconsistent.

Was die Evidenz sagt

  • In a pooled analysis of 119 randomised trials of add-on supplements in type 2 diabetes, chromium significantly improved HbA1c, fasting glucose and HOMA-IR.1

    Vorläufige Evidenz

  • Systematic reviews of chromium and glycaemic control have reached inconsistent conclusions across two decades of trials.2

    Umstritten

Why the trials keep disagreeing

The doses tested span more than twenty-fold, from around 40 micrograms a day to 1,000. Trial durations run from a month to four. The compounds differ — picolinate, chloride, brewer's yeast — and they are not absorbed alike. Baseline chromium status is rarely measured, so nobody knows whether the responders were simply the deficient ones.

A literature this heterogeneous will produce contradictory pooled results indefinitely, and it has. That is why the claim above is tiered contested rather than promoted to emerging.

Was die Evidenz sagt

  • Trials of chromium have used doses ranging from about 40 to 1,000 micrograms a day over durations of one to four months, across different chemical forms.2

    Vorläufige Evidenz

If you do not have diabetes

Every finding above comes from trials in people who already had type 2 diabetes, usually taking medication for it. There is no body of evidence showing chromium does anything useful for a person with normal glucose.

Frank deficiency is rare outside long-term intravenous nutrition. For most readers this is a supplement correcting a deficiency they do not have.

Häufige Fragen

Will chromium help me lose weight?
The weight-loss evidence is weaker than the glucose evidence, which is itself contested. Nothing here supports buying it for that.
Which form should I take?
Picolinate is the most-studied and the best absorbed, and it is also the form in the renal case reports at high doses. No form has been shown clearly superior for outcomes.
